La jolla concours d'elegance

It's our second year helping out with the La Jolla Concours d'Elegance car show, which features some of the most expensive cars around. Like last year, we mainly helped to escort winning cars from their parking spot on the field to the stage. We had a great time looking around the car show and making sure that the attendees were safe. A bonus: proceeds from the car show goes towards the La Jolla Historical Society!

We had so much fun packaging boxes of food to send off to seniors as well as packaging bags of food to send to elementary school students. We (UCSD Rotaract and other volunteers) were able to put together 780 boxes and 465 bags totaling 18,850 meals due to our efficient assembly line formation. Since we enjoyed our time, we look forward to coming back to help package more meals!

Faro de luz mural painting

We had such an amazing experience with PB Rotaract and Rotaract Tijuana Oeste painting a fun mural next to a playground-in-construction for the Faro de Luz community center. Our inner artists came out to play as we painted an entire wall together along with some neighborhood children who joined along with us. The day ended with one of Rotaract Tijuana Oeste's sponsoring Rotarians inviting us over to his place for some freshly cooked carne asada.

We were able to get our week's dose of Vitamin D, spending our time out in the sun digging and uprooting weeds in the agility course field and near the kennels. After a couple hours of hard work, we were rewarded with some puppy play time with Daegan, Matterhorn, Joy, and Nepal. Overall, it was a nice de-stressing event before finals week.

Urban Angels

What an event! Shortly after entering the industrial kitchen where Urban Angels operates, we began to prepare, cook, and serve dinner. After receiving instructions on how to cook the menu items which included 10 whole chickens, a box of wedged potatoes, a pile of peas, and watermelon, we took charge of the kitchen. Seeing as we are college students who can barely cook independently in our kitchens at home, we did have some struggles in the industrial kitchen and ended up having to alter some of the instructions to get dinner out in a timely manner. Due to our awesome teamwork and communication, we were able to serve a delicious and warm meal to people who came in. The smiles on peoples' faces, their look of gratitude, and their complements on the food made our night. We look forward to participating in future events like this, and next time we will be prepared for that industrial kitchen!

First Saturdays

Before heading out to downtown SD to help out with First Saturdays, we grouped up in the Asante Rooms to make loads of PB+J sandwiches to hand out at the event. Despite the rainy and windy weather, we had a great time handing out food and clothes to those who needed it!

In support of our fellow Rotarian, Nancy Gatschet, we served at the Lung Force Walk for the American Lung Association. Some of us got to cheer on walkers/runners along the course while some of us served at the Clean Air tent, giving participants trivia questions and candy. Overall, we had so much fun (including going into the bouncy house after the event)!

Juniper Canyon

The morning sun welcomed us as we cleared a patch of land in Juniper Canyon and dug enough holes for all of the native species that SD Park Ranger Sonja brought for us to plant. In addition, we got to make cones and install them around some of the plants that are susceptible to being eaten. While all of this sounds easy, we definitely worked up a sweat and appetite. However, leaving Juniper Canyon and seeing all of the plants that we worked hard to put in the soil was such a rewarding and fulfilling experience!

Since this was the weekend before finals week, we were so excited to get the chance to work with Friends of Cats and destress a little. This time, we helped with laundry and putting away towels and blankets. Afterwards, we got to spend quality time with the cats as usual.

Once again we return to the Midway. We had a fun time exploring the aircraft carrier while polishing up some of the displays. Afterwards, we went on a quick tour of the upper deck and tried out the flight simulator.
